How are plant lights different from fluorescent or ordinary house lighting? Can I easily substitute somehow?
(I'm starting veggie and flower seeds indoors and am also using a small indoor greenhouse in a sunny room).

New gardenia and turning leaves?
We just bought 3 small gardenia plants which are still in their original plastic pots. I have been keeping them in a small indoor greenhouse under florescent light during the colder/cloudy days and putting them outside on warmer days. The buds are developing well but the smaller leaves around the buds are light green while all the other larger ones are very dark green. I'm afraid they are turning yellow. What's causing this? I used acidic fertilizer with tap water today, and will use distilled the rest of this week. The soil is well drained and moist... and the air humid. Am I doing something wrong?

I am looking for a small indoor greenhouse (not too expensive)?
I love to garden and I am looking for a simple kit that I can use to give my plants a little head start inside. I especially want to grow artichokes this year, they take six months to grow and since I live in freezing cold Michigan I need to get them started inside. I know about the Aerogarden but am looking for something simpler and cheaper. A mini greenhouse with a growth light that won't cost me an arm and a leg. Can any one recommend a kit or a light or something that will help me out? But what about light? Would just a regular lamp shining on it be okay? Should I leave it on 24/7 or just when it is light outside?
